Speakers

Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich.

Born on March 19, 1949, in Omaha, Nebraska, and ordained to the Priesthood for the Archdiocese of Omaha, August 16, 1975. He was appointed by the Holy Father on July 7, 1998, and ordained and installed as seventh Bishop of Rapid City on September 21, 1998. He holds a B.A. in philosophy from the College of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN, MA in theology from North American College and Gregorian University, Rome, and STL & STD from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. Past duties have included pastoral assignments at four parishes in the Archdiocese of Omaha; high school instructor at Paul VI High School, Omaha; Director of the Office of Worship and Chair of Youth Commission for the Archdiocese of Omaha; instructor in the Continuing Education of Priests Program and Diaconate Formation at Creighton University, Omaha; Secretary to the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States in Washington, DC; and Rector of the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. He is currently Chair-elect of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Child and Youth Protection Committee, the Ad Hoc Committee on Scripture Translation and the Ad Hoc Committee to Oversee the Use of the Catechism. He has recently completed terms as the Chair of the Bishops’ Committee on Vocations and as a member of the Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy.  He serves on the Board of Trustees of Saint Paul Seminary of St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN, the National Pastoral Life Center and Catholic Mutual, and is the Episcopal Advisor to the USA Serra Club.

Sister Amy Hoey, RSM, Ph.D

Sister Amy Hoey is a native of Boston and a member of the Northeast Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Her previous ministries have been in education (elementary, secondary, and undergraduate) and religious community leadership. From 1996 until 2006, she served as the Project Coordinator for the USCCB Subcommittee on Lay Ministry which prepared the document Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord: A Resource to Guide the Development of Lay Ecclesial Ministry. Currently, she is a consultant for lay ecclesial ministry.

Brother Paul Bednarczyk, CSC

The current Executive Director of the National Religious Vocations Conference has been serving in his position since July 2002. A native of Connecticut, his prior ministries include 12 years of secondary education in Maryland and Rome, Italy, where he was a teacher, campus minister, and administrator, and nine years as vocation director for the Congregation of Holy Cross, Eastern Province of Brothers. Brother Paul was also a member of his Provincial Council, where he served one term as Director of Formation. He has written a number of articles on religious life and is regularly invited to speak on the topic of vocation ministry

Mark Plaiss

Mark Plaiss is Pastoral Associate at Queen of All Saints Church in Michigan City, IN. Ordained deacon in 2003; Mark is currently the Director of Diaconate Formation for the Diocese of Gary. He is also the Communications Director for the diocese as well.
Mark has the M.A. in theology from Catholic Theological Union. He and his wife Sara have been married 31 years, and they have two sons. Mark and his family live in La Porte, IN.

Timothy Matovina

Timothy Matovina works in the area of Theology and Culture, with specialization in U.S. Catholic and U.S. Latino theology and religion. His most recent book is Guadalupe and Her Faithful: Latino Catholics in San Antonio, from Colonial Origins to the Present (Johns Hopkins, 2005). Other publications include Tejano Religion and Ethnicity (1995), The Alamo Remembered (1995) and, with Virgilio Elizondo, San Fernando Cathedral: Soul of the City (1998) and Mestizo Worship (1998). He has also edited or co-edited seven volumes, most recently Beyond Borders (2000), Presente! U.S. Latino Catholics from Colonial Origins to the Present (2000), Horizons of the Sacred: Mexican Traditions in U.S. Catholicism (2002), and The Treasure of Guadalupe (2006). In addition to his scholarly work, Matovina offers presentations and workshops on U.S. Catholicism and Latino ministry and theology throughout the United States. Mr. Matovina is an Associate Professor of Theology and the William and Anna Jean Cushwa Director of the Cushwa Center for the Study of American Catholicism at the University of Notre Dame.
